The capital is Medan, but the island is known for its abundant natural resources. In Bukit Lawang, you can visit the Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, where you can see these endangered animals. Danau Toba is a gigantic waterfall next to Lake Toba and is one of the most beautiful places in Sumatra. Bukittinggi, next to the Sianok Canyon and surrounded by volcanoes, preserves the remains of the ancient Fort de Kock and provides access to various mountain villages and Danan Maninjau, another lake of volcanic origin. Mentawai Islands and Pulau Nias are some of its exotic beaches and native population. Sumatra is home to a wide variety of races: ancient headhunters, Batak cannibals, the Muslim Minangkabau culture, and primitive clans. One of its mythical sites is the Krakatoa volcano.
